15. The Prodigy – Everybody In The Place
I really don’t like rollercoasters. My childhood dreams of being an astronaut were utterly quashed after having a go on an Orbitron and instantly developing not only severe motion sickness but a firm phobia of non-uniform acceleration. Up until that point I would happy ride log flumes, runaway trains and every other stomach-churning attraction Thorpe Park had to offer. The scarier the better! These days I don’t even like going downwards in lifts. In any given theme park context I now take on the official role of The Mum Holding The Bags.
Luckily for me, pop music has no obvious G-force effects. Yet on ‘Everybody In The Place’ the Prodigy are trying their level best to make me clutch for the handrail and vom up my Frosties – the merry-go-round pipe organ riff veers around and around until I’m feeling more than a bit queasy. Thankfully the spluttery drums tie everything down to a fearsome junglist beat, and my inner ear can get on with the bock-a-dock-dock business of dancing without falling over (beer permitting).
Still, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to listen to this track without thinking of those boy scouts from Jim’ll Fix It eating their lunch at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
