In the interest of fair reportage, it falls to me to point out the existence of Scruffts, the Kennel Club’s competition for crossbreed dogs. Instead of taking skull measurements and grabbing genitals, the judges at Scruffts look for “good character, good health and good temperament with people and other dogs“. Pedigree dogs are not allowed to enter!
Though some fun-hating types may compare this to South African apartheid, it’s all for a good cause – proceeds go to a doggy charity, also run by the Kennel Club.
There are four categories:
– Most Handsome Crossbreed Dog
– Prettiest Crossbreed Bitch
– Child’s Best Friend (“handled by a young person between 6 and 16 years of age”)
– Golden Oldie Crossbreed (for dogs over 8 years of age)
Note that the regional heat held in Windsor is called “The Wag And Bone Show“.
