OK Computer: “Indeed, this is an “R&B” that’s increasingly sci-fi in its hysterical self-loathing flight from the American earth of roadhouse, kitchen, church, juke joint, whorehouse, etc.” Well, thank goodness for that. Anyway, a Joe Carducci piece which Josh found, and which I – gasp! – agree with. But then I also agree with the people who say that digital processing improves rock, too. Thing is, Carducci’s writing like Queens of the Stone Age and Everclear are playing the same type of music, which is obviously not the case. The one thing all those lo-fi types got right was making production values a ‘genre’ not just something you did to one. And with that awareness you can like Carducci’s musicianly rock just as much as you can like radio-friendly digi-rock.
