Minor excitement today as I realised that my new desk has a great view right over the wall into the back garden of Buck1ngham P@lace! I will naturally be keeping an eye open for monarchs, courtiers, individuals in Nazi costumes, etc etc.

Eng-er-land, Eng-er-land, Eng-er-land!!

England football teams have won twice in two days!! On Wednesday night the National Game XI (made up of players under 23 from non-league football) put three past Holland and last night the Women’s team put four past Italy (Italy did scrape a consolation goal in the last 10 minutes). Who needs 4 million quid a year managers? Reports from these games make them sound like a lot more fun than boring old eriksson or taylor friendlies (I would have actually attended the NGXI match in Woking which was FREE to get into, but I wimped out. Hey, it was cold on Wednesday…) and WE WIN!!

There is Euro 2005 to look forward to this summer as well…

Cocktail Clampdown

Cocktail Clampdown: alcohol cannot, apparently, be linked with ‘sexual promiscuity’, so the likes of Sex On The Beach are out. The aphrodisiac properties of these names had escaped me – booze lowers inhibitions, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s called Slippery Nipple or, I don’t know, Moderate Enjoyment Please. Drinks don’t shag people, people do, or something. The fact is that most pub cocktails look naff, taste naff and it’s entirely fitting that they have naff names too. Political correctness gone a bit squiffy.

Fancyapint.com’s State of Pubbing Survey

Fancyapint.com’s State of Pubbing Survey has a curious range of choices for its “biggest problem in pubs today” question. I’m no CAMRA head, as you’re probably aware, but to have NO option for anything relating to quality or range of beer available seems more than a little odd.

I was in the much mentioned Hairy Tortoise last night and I notice their beer menu has a new arrival. Asahi Super Dry. 2000ml. That’s right, my favourite sound in Japan* is now availible in London. Admittedly for the price of ’13.60, which is possibly a bit steep for just under four pints – though the 500ml bottles are ‘3.90 so maybe not. I wonder how many they sell? The three of us were quite tempted last night.

*My trip to Japan two years ago involved much wonder of the multiple beer vending machines, and in particular the worship of the occasional TWO LITRE CANS of Asahi. Not so much for the contents, but more the sound of two kilogrammes of beer falling out of a vending machine. It does make a mighty sound. Marvel at the full range of sizes.

I don’t like Wednesdays…

I don’t like Wednesdays…

…for the FA Cup final. Daft proposal ahoy from the FA. Basically, they have to give players a month off before the 2006 World Cup. The only way they can fit all this football in is, they say, is by having the FA Cup Final on a Wednesday evening, or abolishing replays from the 5th and 6th rounds.

Only. Well, they could have the club not playing in the 5th of 6th rounds to play matches as normal. They could ask the clubs who do play in those rounds to play a weeknight fixture themselves. Job done. They could even (whisper it) ask the Premiership to reduce its numbers, or even take a back seat to the FA Cup and do what needed to be done.

But no. This is the FA. They don’t like standing up for their own competition in the face of defending someone else’s, so the Premiership comes first. On the back of the being the only country whose FA didn’t back the UEFA homegrown player initiative, it’s yet another damning indictment of the independence of the FA, now captured by the beast it created in a spat with the Football League 14 years ago.

Fuck em. Stiffen the FA’s rod. Do your bit here.

MP3, MP4*, iPod…GO!

MP3, MP4*, iPod…GO!

I was listening to a random old mixed CD this morning and C30, C60, C90, Go came on by Bow Wow Wow. Now I have an amazingly soft spot for this song, with its ice cream carton tub thump and Annabella’s yelping sub stream of consciousness. As a kid I particularly liked its subversive Home Taping Is Killing Music challenge, and if this was the kind of music coming out of home taping fans then I was a happy boy. It is probably one of the reason why later I enjoyed Pop Will Eat Itself, the only vague subversiveness of the Sample It, Fuck It, Loop It manifesto appealed to the home taper in me.

(An admission, when The Theme To S’Express and Beat Dis came out I made very long, very rudimentary extended mixes of them using just a tape to tape deck, which I felt made me part of this movement. It didn’t.)

So we are now back in the same boat, except that it isn’t home taping that is killing music, rather ripping (how macho) and filesharing. So where is the firebrand song celebrating this: where is the iPod Bow Wow Wow? Can it really be that I felt more subversive as a seven year old taping Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and trying not to get Richard Skinner’s voice on the end of it?

Well I want my MP3 (cheers Dire Straits) anthem. Can I suggest the Go! Team write it?

*As they always say on Pimp My Ride, MP4 is like MP3 but one better.
