I like the odd prune. And so I got myself a bag of Sainsbury’s Organic Prunes the other day to snack upon (the strange sub Graham Norton packaging not withstanding SO Sainsbury’s Organic). Anyway whilst munching my way through my eyes alighted on the back and the following terrific statement regarding the ingredients.

Sainsbury’s give us a little bit of chemistry on the back of their prune packet, possibly unbeknownst to themselves. Perhaps water cannot be given the Organic seal of approval for political reasons*, but it certainly can’t for chemical reasons. By virtue of its H20ishness it has no carbon in it and hence cannot be described as Organic. YAY SCIENCE!

*For quite a long time the Fair Trade organisation would not certify wine, as they had roots in a prohibitionist organisation who did not want you to drink ANY WINE AT ALL.
