ABS – “What You Got”
Abs Five (now Abs One?) rides the “Uptown Top Ranking” riddim and nicks the chorus too – are we to believe he actually goes out on the pull inna khaki suit an ‘ting? The ladies seem impressed anyhow – it’s a cheating song, sort of, with Benny Hill overtones as Abs bounces from bird to bird with a wink and a rueful smile. You don’t need telling that it’s not as good as “Uptown Top Ranking” but its triumph is that I feel a bit crap pointing that out. Nicest touch: the sad, unexpected little horn solo – maybe Abs has to face the music after all.
