Subjects

It seems as if every subject is covered in Japanese comics. There are the extreme examples, such as Shotaro Ishinomori's 'Japan Inc', which explains the country's economics - this sold over half a million copies - and cookery comics with recipes in every story, but let's look at the main areas instead.

The 281 different anthology titles being published in 2002 broke down this way for number of titles/market share: men 54/37%; boys 21/38%; girls 43/9%; women 59/7%. 104 titles didn't fall neatly into those categories, and included 22 comics about the vaguely pinballish arcade game pachinko, 11 boys' love comics and 17 of 4-panel gag strips. Some important genres:

Romance

Sex

Sport

Samurai

Horror

Salaryman
