Osamu Tezuka 1928-1989

"Japan had Osamu Tezuka, whereas other nations did not." That was how Japanese newspaper Asahi accounted for the massive success of comics in Japan. One might say the same for their animation industry. Tezuka was widely known in Japan as 'the God of comics', and it sometimes seems as if almost every comic artist in Japan was inspired to take up comics by Tezuka. It's impossible to overstate his importance within manga.
