some of the 1,001 statues at Sanjusangen

Sanjusangen

The Sanjusangen temple, built in the twelfth Century and faithfully rebuilt after a fire in the thirteenth, is again notable for crazy extravagance. Its thousand-armed Kannon (they sensibly settled for just forty arms) is surrounded by a thousand other figures, a few of which can be seen here. They are similar, but no two are identical. The 14th Century statues are by Tankei and a large staff of assistants.
