Basu-sen, by Tankei

Tankei, 1173?-1256

The statue shown is one of those from the Sanjusangen temple, where Tankei , eldest son of Unkei, and his colleagues created 1001 statues. This is one of a small number that stand out as something very different from the hordes of similar Buddhist figures. It has an emotional intensity and an unflinching bleakness that reminds me of some of the best late works of Rodin.
