Amidha Buddha, 1053, gold leaf and lacquer over wood

Jocho, 11th Century

The Byodoin temple is thought by many to be the greatest building of the Fujiwara period. The master sculptor in charge was Jocho, and the Amidha Buddha he produced for it was his finest work, and was imitated for centuries after.
