the Ogata Brothers

a Cranes screen, by Ogata Korin

These two came from a wealthy textile family. Their major customer during the brothers' youth was the Empress Tofukumon'in. I've seen her death in 1678 proposed as the reason it all went wrong for the family, but it was a lot of years before the business eventually collapsed, so I am unconvinced. Anyway, they went into the arts, and worked in paint, lacquer, ceramics and clothing.

Note that it might be a while before the range of their works is decently represented here, so my apologies for the incomplete picture in the interim.
