Jiun, 1718-1804

Shinnyu, by Jiun

Jiun may well be my favourite Zen calligrapher. There's an astonishing attack in his work, with loads of flying white and immense energy. This spectacular piece means something like 'essential nature' or maybe 'quiddity' - the underlying reality, not the superficial appearance.
