two pieces by Hakuin: virtue and Namu Amida Butsu

Hakuin Ekaku

Hakuin the Painter (top page)

The two pieces by this famous monk and painter show a forceful, weighty blockiness, a monumentality, even. The left piece means 'I am entering the Buddha's paradise', and was repeated as a prayer. The letters are run together as if making one large structure - almost like an Amerindian totem pole.
