Hon'ami Koetsu 1558-1637

a crane handscroll, painting by Sotatsu and calligraphy by Koetsu

Hon'ami Koetsu came from a family of sword assessors, which may sound an odd profession, but it was a big enough deal that the shogun gifted them a large area of land; and Hon'ami used this to establish a colony of artists and craftsmen, covering many different artistic disciplines. He was a painter, apparently, though I've found none of his work reproduced anywhere, but he was also one of the greatest calligraphers and ceramicists of his age, and worked with distinction in lacquer, garden design, poetry and other territories. His work with Sotatsu, subject of the next page in this section, was particular breathtaking - see another image from their collaboration.
