Ike Taiga 1723-76
It was probably Taiga's wildness above all else that established Nanga as a style
with potential. He studied the Chinese amateurs as well as Japanese Zen (under the
great Hakuin) and picked what he fancied, combining the
touches in fresh and vigorous ways. Like Buson, he was openly professional, and
indeed had unique gimmicks such as painting (before a paying audience) using no
brush, only his fingers. He was married to another distinguished Nanga painter,
Ikeno Gyokuran.
