Hayao Miyazaki, 1941-

Spirited Away

Miyazaki, the first internationally famous anime director, and a founder of Studio Ghibli, won the Japanese Academy Award for best film twice, for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away: each also became, in turn, Japan's highest grossing film ever. These beautiful animated movies, like Totoro and Nausicaa, share a reverence for the natural world, a regret for its passing, that is very Japanese, with roots in shinto's nature worship. He's become an immensely popular figure worldwide, extending what is accepted by wide audiences in animated movies. He's also a terrific manga creator:
