Autumn Grasses In Moonlight: a pair of lacquer-painted screens

context: lacquerwork > artists
> shibata zeshin

Shibata Zeshin the painter

Whether this belongs under lacquerwork or painting I don't know or much care. Zeshin was the first person to find a technique (as much or more to do with treating the paper as anything to so with the lacquer) to paint on paper in a way that meant it could be rolled and unrolled many times without damaging the lacquer. That's all very well, but for me he then went on to be an absolutely magnificent painter in this new form, as shown by the pair of screens here showing autumn grasses in moonlight.
