one of Araki's bibles (click on it for a large version)

Takako Araki b.1921

Araki is my favourite modern ceramic artist. She makes ceramic objects that look exactly like bibles, generally damaged by fire, water or somehow badly weathered. They're breathtaking on a technical level alone, producing curled, charred paper in ceramics (and some are hard to move without pages breaking off), but they are also deeply moving in ways I can't easily verbalise. I don't think I've seen anything in fine art ceramics to come close to her work.
