a tea bowl by Ninsei Nonomura

Kyokaki Ware

Kyokaki ware was enameled and often sumptuously decorated - indeed, overdecorated at times, especially in the case of the often hideous Satsuma export wares. Its greatest potter was Ninsei Nonomura, for whom I have found wildly differing dates, so I'll settle here for 17th C. He took influences from such painting schools as Kano and Rimpa, and from lacquer, and produced bold and beautiful items.
