a photo of Oe, by Hipschaefer

Kenzaburo Oe 1935-

His first stories were published in 1957, and since then he has built a varied and ambitious oeuvre, dealing with a range of interesting themes: disability, sex, Japan and the West, radical outsiders, religion and cults, and more. He was awarded the Nobel in 1994, which seemed to give him pause, but he did resume writing a little while later.
