Other medieval stories

Stories of the romantic and hedonistic Heian sort were thought frivolous by warriors and monks, and they declined. Putzar & Seni'chi list six subjects of the shorter stories popular in the Kamakura and Muromachi times: imperial court, monks, warriors (an important subgenre focussed on gay love between samurai), commoners (stories of getting ahead, lots of comedy and satire), exotic lands and animals.
