Shusaku Endo

Endo was a Catholic (around 1% of Japanese are Christian), and is regularly compared to Graham Greene (who was a big admirer). His work is full of illness and religious morality. Perhaps his best novel, Silence, was about a tortured Portugese missionary to Japan in the 17th Century.
