Heian Diaries
|
a 13th Century copy of the Tosa Nikki
|
Diary keeping dates back at least to the 7th Century, and the Heian era has many important diaries, including
imperial and travel diaries from the 9th Century. It also includes the interesting Tosa Nikki, the Tosa Diary,
written in 935AD by Ki no Tsurayuki: this was a man with a female pseudonym, writing about his official travels
as if a woman in the party; this may well be the first book by a man in hiragana.
There were some very important variations on the diary, too, as shown by the next page.
