Kenzo Tange, 1913-2005

Tange's FCG Headquarters

Tange's early work is deeply indebted to Le Corbusier in particular, with lots of concrete and massive pillars - it often looks rather New Brutalist. His later work still has the same sense of strength. His Tokyo City Hall is one of the city's great landmarks, but I particularly love the FCG headquarters, also in Tokyo: these offices and TV studios are housed in two towers almost 400' tall with meccano-like corridors connecting them, and a 100' diameter spherical restaurant sitting amongst these connections. It looks more like a comic book mad scientist's machinery than a building.
