The IP thing is interesting – they have a horde of younger characters mostly as a residue of spending a decade trying to launch teenage superhero titles that didn’t really find an audience (Runaways and Young Avengers aside). I’m not saying “they’ve stopped creating new characters”, I’m saying “they’ve stopped creating new characters who can sell a solo book, or an action figure, or a movie” – of course there’s continual rumours of a Runaways film and they’ve shown with GOTG that they’re happy to put the spadework in to build up a property pre-film. So I might be quite wrong. But that aside I think we’re talking Deadpool at Marvel and Harley Quinn at DC – both late 80s/early 90s.

Two things stand out though: I’d disagree on the idea that they don’t have any new IP: between Avengers Academy, Young Avengers, Runaways, Wolverine & the X-Men, they have enough that they had to create a title just to kill them off! Which is bitter irony for DC, as they are hungry for a new generation, and their most kidlike property is Teen Titans Go! – none of the characters in which have been around for less than 20 years.

The other is that I’d be a little surprised if DC remained short of legacy, since its Creative Director, Geoff Johns, made his bones in JSA, which is steeped in it. But then, I haven’t read a main-continuity DC comic in several years (largely due to Mr Jones)

You have them ordering the X-Men to stop time-traveling, trying to arrest Scott Summers, and the worse barring the FF from entering the Baxter Building and seemingly OK with Sue’s kids being taken away from her.

When did they become The Superhero Police? And such bullies?
