Loved Evan Bird as Benjie, part Bieberish uber-brat, part world-weary beyond his years. His final line is devastating. Brilliant casting all round though. Bad people doing bad things.

Tell you what, who was Bad Babysitter 2 aimed at? The ‘vabina’ scene we catch is too raunchy for kids and you’re not telling me teenagers are going to go for that stuff?

Gut in a knot of tension throughout, I quite liked the sense of ‘oh God, how is he going to fuck this one up’. It seemed exactly like what I’d do: “Raargh, Revenge! Oh shit, this is harder than it looks.” Like in Watchmen where Rorschach jumps through the window of Molloch’s house and you’re like ‘that’s so baddass’ then he lands and breaks his ankle because that’s what happens if you jump out of a first floor window. Not that Dwight ever seemed baddass in Blue Ruin but he was going through the motions of macho revenge without really thinking through the consequences, almost like how little children play chess, as though their opponent is a static victim to be picked off, rather than an adversery to be watched. Of course he has to wise up in the end or it would all be deeply depressing.

Also loved the metal-head gun enthusiast mate.

I keep flip flopping on Birdman, I liked most of the acting (Norton using his energy and image very well), but thought the premise was wrong-headed (and plain wrong). It seemed to aim at very soft targets, and still generally miss, and went on two endings too long. Possibly worth it all for that one Lindsay Duncan scene though.

I found it ultimately quite disappointing – perhaps I was expecting too much. And although Dwight is incompetent, I think that actually in those circumstances, most of us would have failed at the first hurdle, thus sparing the blood to come. The one bit I really liked was with the metal-head buddy.

(And, yes, Birdman is exhausting, not least because there is SO MUCH SHOUTING. Can’t remember the last film I saw with so much. Enjoyed Norton in it, though, which isn’t always the case).

And, of course, it’s terrific to have some writing about films from you again.
