Japanese Modernisation and Mingei Theory: Cultural Nationalism and Oriental Orientalism by Yuko Kikuchi
An exceptional work of research and rethinking the assumptions of Mingei scholarship. It's a
little heavy on facts at times - this is a work for specialists, not a book for the popular
market - and it kept making me think it was starting to lean a little hard on theory
(especially post-colonialism and orientalism), but it always avoided that, and got the
balance between following established paradigms and approaching things directly, with fresh
thought, about right. A genuinely excellent book.
