Origins of Noh

Noh ("talent") derived from dances (sangaku, gigaku) and other performances (such as acrobatics and juggling) performed outside shrines. The performers wore masks representing demons, legendary animals and people. It was turned into an identifiable new form in the 14th Century by Kanami (1333-1384) and his son Zeami, who warrants his own page. They created rules and principles which are largely still followed today.
