No: The Classical Theatre of Japan by Donald Keene
The writing of this is close to perfect: an in-depth analysis of the greatness, aesthetics
and strategies of noh, very thorough, expertly knowledgeable, superb at teasing out and
explicating the mysterious poetics and meanings of its texts, acting, music, dancing, clothes,
masks and so on. The photos are a touch dull, possibly because they are B&W where colour would
be valuable, but this only emphasises how excellent the text is. I can hardly imagine there
could be a better book on the subject, unless it were this with better illustrations.
