The Kabuki Guide by Masakatsu Gunji

A small, populist book, but pretty thorough in its coverage of the basics, and well illustrated with photos. I could have lived with fewer synopses of plays (36 of them!), interesting and informative as they are, perhaps in favour of more on the less comprehensible conventions, symbols and meanings of kabuki performances. Nonetheless, a good basic guidebook.
