context: poetry > haiku

a haiga (poem, calligraphy and painting) by Buson

Yosa Buson 1716-83

As well as being one of the great nanga painters, he was one of the great haiku poets. He was a follower of Basho, but more of a romantic, as well as being technically superb, intellectual and versatile. My favourite of his is "Mi ni shimu ya / bosai no kushi / neya ni fumu," or "What piercing cold I feel: / my dead wife's comb, in our bedroom, / under my heel..."
