Gibon Sengai 1750-1837

bamboo in the wind

Sengai is another of the great Zen masters of recent centuries, and I intend to come back and extend this significantly at some point.

For now I'll note that there are different views of his work. Awakawa emphasises the monastic side, and claims that he wasn't technically a terrific painter. Addiss calls him a true master of brushwork. I take a look at the bamboo painting here (here's another), and I'm with Addis all the way.

An additional note is that he was friends with a very, very different painter, Ito Jakuchu.
