Monk Procession by Nantembo

context: painting > Zen painting > Subjects

Begging Monks

Zen monks have been setting off from their temples in the morning in identically-dressed columns to beg, chanting as they go, for centuries. The image hadn't been painted much, but was turned into its delightful modern form by the great Nantembo, and picked up and continued by many others, particularly Kasumi Buncho. Sometimes you just get them facing towards you, but I particularly like the coming and going scroll-pairs. The way the feet are drawn on the monks going away from us has always reminded me rather of the British newspaper comic strip Andy Capp. The appeal I think is in the control of the tones, the rhythms of the lines and shapes.
