Mountain Monkeys

Besides the European use of chiaroscuro on what might have started off more or less as a Chinese landscape, we see here evidence of a short-lived eighteenth century fashion for grotesque distortion. We also see a very western-style painting of one of my favourite subjects - monkeys!
