White Crane in Water by Kano Motonobu, 1543

Kano Motonobu 1477-1559

Motonobu was the son of Masanobu, and is probably the most highly rated Kano painter, and the most famous. You can see a more decorative turn to his work compared to his father in the image here, though some of his work still looks entirely Zen in style. He was also famous because he married the daughter of Tosa Mitsunobu, head of the older and more established Tosa school, which was both a mark of respect to the emerging dynasty, and a way in to the school's secrets, and this is therefore seen as a key moment in the cementing of the Kano reputation.
