context: painting > sourcesPlayfulness in Japanese Art by Nobuo TsujiA fascinating subject, the idea that playfulness is a key difference between Japanese and Chinese art, but unfortunately this is a bit "Look! A smiling figure from the 10th Century! Q.E.D.!" The reproductions are very poor - all but one in B&W, often printed too small and badly to make out. Ultimately, far too content to just line up its examples and point and say "See, playfulness!" Can't find it on Amazon at time of writing. |
