Stray Dogs & Lone Wolves: The Samurai Film Handbook by Patrick Galloway
After all the academia and theorising of most of the books I read for this, I
thought a more tabloidy approach might be refreshing, but actually the clumsy
writing, sloppy thinking and very limited background knowledge on show here weren't
any fun. He does know a fair amount about samurai movies, but there's too much plot
exposition and not enough insight into theme or form, or into the complexities of
samurai culture, for this to be very useful expect as a consumer guide for
beginners - which can be valuable, and its judgements and selection aren't at all
bad, but it wasn't what I wanted or needed.
