Nagisa Oshima, 1932-

Oshima was the main figure in the start of the 'nuberu bagu' (nouvelle vague). A challenging director, he focussed on disaffected youth, and attacked the left for its failures while clearly loathing the right - he's the closest Japan had to a Godard. His most famous film:

In The Realm Of The Senses

He came up with some more taboos to transgress in Gohatto in 1999, which features a love affair between elite samurai. It's no secret that love and sex between samurai was common, but Western morality had made this unacceptable subject matter.
