Combs

a lacquered comb

The inro section mentions that women didn't wear those dangling objects, and that jewellery never caught on in Japan. I guess one could argue that the combs and hairpins women wore through their complex hairdos (see the prints of fashionable courtesans for illustrations) were the next best thing. The combs weren't for combing at all, but for holding the hair in the elaborate and outre styles that became popular. They often came with a matching hairpin.
