Joei-ji

This might be the first display of dry rocks as a central attraction - here it's on grass, not raked gravel, and it's not enclosed by walls. It was designed by my favourite Japanese painter, Sesshu, in the 15th Century. He also designed the original garden at Tofuku-ji, which appears in its completely rebuilt form in the upcoming modern gardens section.
