Karatsu ware

The Karatsu kiln started around 1500, but became famous thanks to the Korean potters brought back as prisoners after Hideyoshi's attempted invasion. It's been suggested that these captives were the main point of the excursion...

It was technically quite advanced, using the kick-wheel and multi-chamber kilns. The favoured style involved sketchy underglaze painting on pale clay.
