Tokoname

This area was much the biggest producer through the Kamakura and Muromachi eras. They made practical ceramics for ordinary people, never tea ceremony art-objects or porcelains for the aristocracy. Until quite recently, it was still possible to find 15th Century Tokoname stoneware in use in farmhouses and such places, but it's unlikely that any still remain out of the hands of collectors and museums. Their wares tended towards the rough and solid, with only natural ash-glazing. I think they're often beautiful.
