a Bizen pot from around 1600

Bizen

This area specialised in low-fired pots of dense, dark clay. They came to wide prominence when their sombre shades were admired by tea ceremony aesthetes from the 16th Century. They also developed techniques to achieve reddish striping and flecks of dull orange, and of covering some areas so they would not be ash-glazed.
