context: calligraphy > Heian period

Hokke Gisho

This is notable because it is the oldest surviving writing on paper in Japan. It is credited to the revered Prince Shotoku, the man who made Buddhism the national religion, and was written early in the 7th Century. Note that this is before the Heian period, and that it is written in Chinese characters.
