Nihon Shoki or Nihongi

The Chronicles of Japan dates from about 720AD, and is an account of the country's emperors, compiled and edited by Prince Toneri and others. It is certainly politically distorted, as well as mythologised, but less so than the Kojiki. It also looks outwards to China and Korea, whereas the Kojiki was entirely internal. It's written in Chinese: this seemed to be considered more authoritative.

backwards: Kojiki

forwards: Jogu Shotoku Hooteisetsu
