Hyaku monogatori

One Hundred Supernatural Tales was a game whereby 100 candles were lit, then everyone took turns telling short ghost stories. After each tale, a candle was extinguished, eventually leading to darkness. It started among samurai (who were short of ways to prove their bravery in such peaceful times), and moved to Edo townsmen. It started in the 17th Century - there were lots of books of that title published in the 17th and 18th Centuries, and lots of artists providing illustrations.
