From Shinto to Ando: Studies in Architectural Anthropology in Japan by Gunter Nitschke
Also the author of a terrific book on Japanese Gardens. This is a fascinating collection
of essays looking at the subconscious underlying architecture - the symbolism, the meanings,
the resonances. Too much covers shinto ritual and ideas for my interests, but there is a
tremendous essay on the various uses of the Japanese kanji character usually pronounced as
'ma', for 'space' or 'place', revealing the different psychology we can infer from the
linguistic uses, and another excellent piece on boundary areas - screens, verandahs and so on.
