Kinkakuji

This beautiful villa, with a name meaning 'Golden Pavilion', was built by a shogun at the end of the 14th Century, though it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times - today's building dates from 1955. I highly recommend Yukio Mishima's The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, which deals with the destruction that caused that rebuilding.
