Saw Aaron Cometbus last night face-to-face for the first time since 1986; his background very different from Penny Reel’s (Aaron born middle-class Berkeley 1968) but they feel like similar souls: self-taught, created prose w/ antecedents (of course) but not really like anyone else’s, see that music comes with stories attached but you have to look for the stories, idealistic and you shouldn’t assume you have to compromise, and knowledge is crucial (Aaron was asked what book he was currently reading: he named one about (I think) a Moroccan splinter rebel group in 1978. It is history. It can matter, be remembered, just as Berkeley punk 1981 matters, should be part of history.)

Disappointed that King Saul is in the Hudson piece as decoration, mainly; not that he’s unimportant as such. (Also, not sure the article is there in full. Seems to end abruptly bottom of p. 2, “I was brought up on the wilder side of life.”)

mark sinker: Mysteriously enough the version that’s up at Rock’s Backpages ends even sooner — its last paragraph is the one that runs from “As we file” to “‘as Keith Hudson’”!
